Basement Makeovers Worth Starting This Season

Turn the forgotten downstairs into a lounge, work corner and play zone with paint, rugs and layered light.

A basement makeover starts with light and zones. Paint the walls a warm white, lay one large rug to anchor the seating, and divide the room into a lounge corner, a work table and a play or hobby strip.

Choose forgiving furniture: a washable slipcovered sofa, nesting side tables and closed storage for games, cables and craft supplies. Wall-mounted shelves keep the floor clear and make low ceilings feel taller.

Finish with layered lighting: a floor lamp by the sofa, a task light over the table and a string of warm bulbs along the beam. Suddenly the basement is the room everyone fights over.
